9 Costly Cleaning Mistakes that Slow You Down
You want to clean really fast and move on. However, you are probably making these nine costly cleaning mistakes that slow you down:
You clean windows on a sunny day
If you clean your windows on a sunny day, your cleaner dries before you wipe it off, leaving a streak. And because the streak annoys you so much (the reason why you cleaned the window in the first place), you’ll have to clean the window again.
You don’t follow the ‘top to bottom’ rule
Oh, are there cleaning rules now? You bet.
When cleaning your home, start with the ceiling fan or anything up high before dusting your sofas and then vacuuming the floor. If you hate vacuuming, for example, and choose to start with that to get it out of the way, you’ll have to re-vacuum the entire house since the dust from the ceiling will scatter all over the floor.
You don’t sort laundry
Never mix your laundry. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a hurry or have all day; mixing your lint-givers with lint-catchers adds the extra task of getting rid of the lint on your fabric. And dark clothes may discolour lighter clothes, giving you the headache of washing them again. Sometimes, it’s impossible to undo the damage.
You prewash your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher
If you do this, you’re wasting a ton of precious time. Most modern dishwashers don’t need a pre-rinse: empty the leftovers in the bin, place the dishes in the dishwasher and switch on. If you’ve left dishes until the food goes hard and crusty, you can do the “rinse only” cycle before running the normal wash.
You leave the rotating brush of your vacuum on when cleaning your bare floor
When switching to wood or tile floor, switch off the rotating brush of your vacuum to avoid scattering dust and dirt. With the brush on, the vacuum will not only push existing dirt around, but scatter what is already in the cleaning bag on a hard floor.
You never leave your tile cleaner to soak
When you pour or spray tile cleaner, don’t rush to scrub it off. Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes (unless it specifically says not to); this will help soften and dissolve soap scum and stains and make scrubbing less tiring. Your elbows will thank you in the morning.
Your family doesn’t remove shoes at the door
To this day, my family still doesn’t understand why I ask them to remove their shoes at the door. The truth is that every time they keep their shoes on, they walk the dirt and dust from outside all over the house. It soon piles up and makes cleaning very time-consuming.
You clean your pet wrong
A lint roller isn’t for cleaning pets. Period.
When cleaning your pet, instead of grabbing the lint roller, reach for a damp rubber glove. Leave the lint roller for your clothes.
You forget that your cleaners need cleaning too
After every cleaning session, you should wash and air your mops, empty and dust your vacuum cleaning bag, and wash every other piece of equipment you used. If you can’t clean them, replace them as soon as they start putting more dirt back than they remove.
